Women's Soccer Knocks Off SUNY Poly, 2-1

UTICA, N.Y. – The SUNY Geneseo women's soccer team traveled to face off against SUNY Poly in Empire 8 action on Saturday afternoon, and came away with a 2-1 victory. The win moves the Knights to 5-4-7 on the year and 5-1-4 in conference match ups.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Knights wasted no time putting pressure on the Wildcats. They were able to generate some early corner kick opportunities and keep the SUNY Polytechnic defenders on their back foot. At around the six minute mark, Kirsten Shepherd was able to find the lower right-hand corner of the net on an assist from Abby Foster, putting the Knights up 1-0.
  • The Knights kept firing on the net with many near misses. However, in the 35th minute, Ella Yartym was fed the ball by Samantha DeNisco, where she scored down the center of the net, giving the Knights a 2-0 first half lead.
  • The Knights offense wouldn't slow down, constantly putting pressure on the Wildcat's goalkeeper. They were unable to score for the rest of the game, but that didn't stop them from keeping the offensive play aggressive. The Knights would only allow one goal on a penalty kick in the 88th minute in the game, making the final score 2-1 for the Knights.
QUICK FACTS:
  • The Knights out shot the Wildcats 33-3, and held a 9-1 corner kick advantage as well.
  • 13 Knights registered shots in this game. Yartym led the way, hitting double digits with ten shots. She also registered 4 shots on goal.
  • Goalkeepers Natalie Budgar and Emily McLouth each played 45 minutes in net for the Knights.
