Women's Volleyball Falls to Amherst and Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's volleyball team fell 3-1 to Amherst College and 3-0 to University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon. The Knights now sit at 2-7 on the season.  

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Geneseo and Amherst traded points through the first 10 of the first set, until the Knights went on a five-point run to take a lead. Zooey Gagnier led the way with three services aces. 

  • Amherst went on a run of their own, putting them up 17-13. Kate Barba and Maddy Baumann both controlled the Knights offense, but the team was unable to win the set, falling 25-19.

  • In the second set, Geneseo was up 11-8 with two kills from Cory Elder helping lead the way. The Knights held onto their lead, winning the set 25-23. 

  • Going into the third, both teams kept it close until Amherst went on a five-point run to help pull away. Barba had two aces and a kill to bring the deficit three, but the Knights took a third set loss, 25-21.  

  • In the fourth, the Knights took the lead at 21-20, behind kills from Maddi Gamberg and Cory Elder. However, Amherst came back and took the final set 25-23. 

  • The Yellowjackets got off to a hot start in the second set, going up 17-8 in the first, and despite their efforts, the Knights could not catch up and lost the first set 25-13. 

  • In the second, the team was unable to get the offense going and Rochester took the set by a score of 25-14

  • The Knights came out on fire in the third, going on a six-point run with kills coming from Barba and Baumann. Both teams traded points, but the Knights were unable to come out on top, losing 26-24. 

KEY FACTS: 

  • Barba led the team in kills, tallying 18 against Amherst and nine against the Yellowjackets.

  • Carolyn Mack had 35 assists through both games, securing a season high of 21 against Amherst. Defensively, Gagnier led the team in digs with a combined 26 from the two games.

WHAT'S NEXT:  

The Knights have their first home game on Saturday, September 21st against the University of Scranton at 12 PM.
