Field Hockey Opens 2024 Season With 3-2 Comeback Victory

TROY, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo field hockey team picked up a thrilling comeback victory in its opening game of the 2024 season on Friday afternoon at RPI. The Knights found themselves trailing 2-0 after the first quarter, but scored three unanswered goals to secure the 3-2 victory for the program's second-straight season opening win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • RPI got ahead of Geneseo early, scoring the game's first goal just over two minutes into the action. The Engineers then backed it up a few minutes later and took a 2-0 lead in the opening quarter. Sam Lewis recorded a shot on goal in an attempt to cut the deficit to one, but RPI was able to make the save.
  • Ella Greico got the Knights on the board in the second quarter, scoring a goal off an assist from Shannon Cunningham. The Knights kept the pressure on for the rest of the second quarter, but the Engineers were able to maintain the 2-1 lead heading to halftime.
  • Greico notched her second goal of the game just over one minute into the third quarter, this time deflecting the ball into the goal off a ball played in by Sam Lewis. The Knights were quick to score again in the fourth quarter, with Grace Olczak scoring the go-ahead goal off an assist from Lewis. Geneseo's defense held strong down the stretch and helped secure the season-opening win.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Greico's pair of goals comes after finishing second on the team in goals scored last season with four. Lewis' two assists matched her season total from 2023.
  • Lilly Spitz earned the win in goal, tallying five saves.
  • Geneseo now takes the all-time lead against RPI, posting a record of 4-3 against the Engineers.
