Softball Sweeps Fredonia in First Conference Action of the Season

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team was able to tally their first two home wins on Sunday afternoon in their conference opening doubleheader against Fredonia. The Knights won the first game 11-3 in five innings, then won the second game 10-5 to complete the sweep.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first game started with a scoreless first inning, but in the second, the Knights' bats got hot.  Audrey Minton put one over the fence to start the Knights scoring run, followed by singles from Tori Guary and Rebecca Schwartz to give the Knights a 4-0 lead heading into the third.
  • A pair of runs from Fredonia cut the lead down to 4-2 going into the bottom of the third.
  • The Knights scored another run in the third with another single from Audrey Minton, bringing the score up to 5-2.
  • The Knights really broke it open in the fourth with singles from Schwartz and Kaitlyn Schmitz along with an RBI pop-up from Ray Schumacher.  A few errors from Fredonia helped the Knights close the inning with a score of 11-2
  • In the top of the 5th, the Knights held Fredonia to only one run, allowing the game to end early for a mercy rule at a score of 11-3.
  • In the second game, the Knights jumped out to another quick lead with a sacrifice fly from Schumacher and a double from Bella Nadzan.  These plays combined with an error gave the Knights an early lead of 4-0.
  • After a scoreless second inning, Fredonia was able to earn some runs back with a few doubles in the top of the third, putting some pressure on the Knights with a score of 4-3.
  • Geneseo was quick to answer in the bottom of the third with a double from Nadzan and a sac fly from Haley Coombs to give the Knights back 2 runs.
  • In the 5th, Coombs with a double, and Gabriella Smith with a single brought home the Knights two more runs.  And in the following inning, a single from Audrey Minton brings in another pair of runs, making the score 10-3 heading into the last inning.
  • Despite a valiant effort from Fredonia, the Knights close out the game with a second win with a score of 10-5.
