Softball Streaks To Fourth-Straight Win With Sweep Over Buffalo St.

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team came out on top in both games of a doubleheader against the Buffalo State Bengals on Wednesday afternoon with scores of 2-1 and 9-2. The Knights now sit at 7-13 overall and 4-0 in SUNYAC play on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In game one, both teams were shut down until the top of the third when Buffalo State scored on a ground out to second after an error and a walk put a runner in scoring position.
  • Despite putting together a rally in the bottom of the fourth, the Knights didn't get on the scoreboard until the fifth when Hannah Olejniczak led off with a single to second. Kaitlyn Schmitz then drove her home with a fly-out to right to tie the game at one.
  • Geneseo went into the bottom of the seventh still tied, but three straight batters reaching base gave the Knights a great opportunity to put the game away. Schmitz came up and hit a sacrifice fly to left allowing pinch runner Olivia Fazio to cross the plate and walking-off game one for Geneseo.
  • Game two started well for the Knights as a throwing error by Buffalo State, single by Schmitz, and a hit-by-pitch to Brooke Fraas allowed Ray Schumacher to hit an RBI ground out. Geneseo left two runners on-base but took a quick 1-0 lead.
  • The Bengals immediately answered by scoring two runs in the top of the second as a double and single put runners on and gave way to RBI opportunities.
  • Schumacher struck again in the third as they singled to left field and drove in Schmitz, who walked earlier in the inning. Fraas, who had singled up the middle prior, then scored on a wild pitch to give the Knights the lead, 3-2.
  • Audrey Minton finished out the scoring in the third inning with a single through the left side that scored Fazio and extended their lead to two runs.
  • A rally in the bottom of the fourth led the bases for Schmitz, who laid down a short single in front of the catcher that scored Jane Reilly. Fraas followed with a double to center which drove in Schmitz and Rebecca Schwartz and gave Geneseo a 7-2 lead.
  • The Knights' defense stood firm and didn't allow another run through the final four innings while Schwartz added to Geneseo's lead with a two-run home run as they finished the sweep with a 9-2 victory in game two.
QUICK FACTS
  • Schmitz also pitched a complete game in the first leg of the doubleheader. She recorded zero earned runs on two walks and struck out four in her first win of the season.
  • Fraas went 3-3 with a HBP and recorded two RBIs, one run, and one stolen base in the second game against the Bengals.
  • Schwartz's home run in game two was her first of the year and fourth of her career.
  • Gabriella Petroski delivered another complete game in the second match-up, allowing only two runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking zero batters.

Geneseo will travel to Oswego to take on the Lakers in a double-header starting at 3 PM on Friday, Apr. 12.
