POTSDAM, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team swept a two-game set against the Potsdam Bears on Saturday afternoon with scores of 11-1 and 18-0. The Knights now sit at 17-15 overall and 10-2 in SUNYAC play on the season and are on a nine-game winning streak.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Knights got on the board early in game one as Tori Guary got on base via a single to shortstop, and two groundouts moved the runner to third. A single to right field by Ray Schumacher drove in Guary and gave Geneseo a 1-0 lead.
- In the top of the second, the Knights brought seven runs across as they recorded eight hits in the inning. Extra base hits from Guary, Rebecca Schwartz, Audrey Minton, and Tara Brochu drove in RBIs, as Geneseo came out of the frame with a 8-0 lead.
- Geneseo struck again in the top of the third as Brooke Fraas hit an RBI groundout to drive Guary into home.
- The Knights added one more run in each of the fourth and fifth innings, first on a groundout by Lauren Gulick that drove in Brochu, and then from an RBI fly-out by Fraas that scored Guary.
- Potsdam was able to bring one runner around in the bottom of the fourth, but they couldn't lessen the deficit enough as Geneseo came away with an 11-1 win in five innings.
- The Knights tagged the Bears for six runs in the first inning of game two, as ten batters reached the plate. Minton, Bella Nadzan, and Emily Sylvanus recorded RBIs, while multiple runners crossed the plate due to errors and passed balls.
- In the top of the second, Schwartz led off with a double to right center and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
- A walk and two straight singles in the top of the third put Nadzan in a position to score on an error by the shortstop, while Haley Coombs and Guary crossed the plate later in the inning due to a wild pitch and RBI single.
- Up 10-0 in the top of the fourth, Geneseo struck with another rally as seven more runs came across to score in the frame. An RBI single by Olivia Fazio opened up the scoring, as timely hitting and productive at-bats combined to extend the Knights' lead to 17. Amanda Audia, Lauren Bieniek, and Olivia Coons all recorded their first RBIs of the day later in the inning.
- One final run scored in the top of the fifth on an RBI groundout by Mikalya Bucci, and POtsdam was held scoreless in the bottom of the inning, sealing Geneseo's 18-0 win in game two and sweep of the doubleheader.
