Softball Nabs 11th-Straight Win With Sweep At Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team extended their win streak to 11-straight games on Wednesday afternoon, traveling to Brockport and picking up a sweep with scores of 4-2 and 14-1. The Knights are now 19-15 on the season and 12-2 in SUNYAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Knights opened up game one in a defensive battle, with neither team able to score in the first two innings. However, Geneseo's offense took off in the top of the third inning. Hannah Olejniczak led off with a single to center, then after a walk from Rebecca Schwartz, Brooke Fraas drove in Olejniczak with a single. Freshman Ray Schumacher followed up Fraas with a three-run home run, extending the Knights lead to 4-0.
  • The Golden Eagles picked up a run in both the fifth and sixth inning, but Kaitlyn Schmitz and the Knights defense limited the damage and earned the 4-2 victory.
  • Geneseo didn't waste any time on offense in game two, jumping ahead 4-0 in the first inning. Schumacher picked up a two RBI double, and then Audrey Minton hit a two-run home run.
  • The Knights added four more runs in the second inning, with Schumacher adding yet another RBI to their impressive day. Schwartz also picked up an RBI single in the inning, Fraas scored on a wild pitch, and Minton added the final RBI of the inning off a fielder's choice.
  • Geneseo capped off the dominant game two performance with a six-run third inning. Schwartz, Schumacher, Minton, and Gabriella Smith each tallied RBIs in the inning.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Schumacher led the offense with seven RBIs between the two games and four hits. Minton added four RBIs and Schwartz three.
  • Schmitz threw all seven innings in the first game, striking out nine while only allowing the two runs. Mikayla Bucci threw all five innings in the second game, allowing just two hits and one run.
  • The Knights sit in second place in the conference entering the final weekend with a record of 12-2, but they control their own destiny and can earn the No. 1 seed by sweeping their final four games.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Knights hosted New Paltz (28-4, 14-0) on Friday at Vic Raschi Field at 3 and 5, then host Oneonta (18-14, 10-4) on Saturday at 12 and 2 for the regular season finale and senior day.
