Softball Picks Up A Sweep At Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team came out on top in both games of a doubleheader against the Plattsbugh Cardinals on Friday afternoon with scores of 4-2 and 13-6. The Knights now sit at 15-15 overall and 8-2 in SUNYAC play on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Game one started quietly with neither team notching a run until the bottom of the second when a walk, single, and error allowed a runner to cross the plate for the Cardinals.
  • The Knights answered back quickly, however, as Tori Guary led off the next half inning by reaching on an error while Rebecca Schwartz followed up with a double to left center. A ground out by Brooke Fraas drove Guary in from third, as Geneseo tied the game up at one.
  • Geneseo's squad took their first lead of the day in the top of the fourth as Tara Brochu doubled to lead off the inning, before being driven in on a ground out from Lauren Gulick
  • The Knights put their finishing touches on game one in the top of the fifth as Schwartz opened the frame with a double to right just before Fraas tripled to bring her home. Two batters later, Audrey Minton stepped to the plate and hit a sac fly to center, scoring Fraas.
  • While the Cardinals were able to scrape a run together in the bottom of the seventh, the Knights limited the damage and came out of the first game with a 4-2 victory.
  • The second game of the doubleheader opened up in a huge way as Geneseo put together a seven-run rally while bringing 12 batters to the plate in the top of the first. Fraas, Minton, Schwartz, Gabriella Smith, and Hannah Olejnicza all tallied at least one RBI throughout the inning.
  • Plattsburgh was able to bring one runner across to score in both the bottom of the first and third innings, as they lessened their deficit to five runs early on.
  • The Knights extended their lead in the top of the fourth, though, as singles by Guary and Schwartz paid off as Fraas and Ray Schumacher drove both runners in later in the inning.
  • Haley Coombs gave Geneseo an eight-run lead with a solo homer to left center in the fifth inning, marking the first of her career.
  • The Cardinals were able to strike for four runs with two outs in the bottom of the fifth as small ball and errors by the Knights allowed seven straight batters to reach base.
  • Another triple from Fraas, as well as a single by Schumacher marked Geneseo's final RBIs of the day, as they came out with a 13-6 win in game two against the Cardinals
