Softball Earns Thrilling Game Two Victory at Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team earned a doubleheader split at Cortland on Tuesday afternoon, earning an exciting 5-4 victory in the second game after dropping the opening game 9-6. The split moves Geneseo's record to 9-15 overall and 6-2 in SUNYAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the opening game, Audrey Minton put Geneseo ahead 1-0 with her team-leading third home run of the season. However, the Red Dragons had the answer in the bottom half of the inning and took a 4-1 lead.
  • Bella Nadzan put the Knights back within reach in the top of the third with a two RBI single in the third inning, but Geneseo found themselves needing another rally later in the game as Cortland's offense was able to make it a 7-3 advantage.
  • Geneseo put together a three-run rally in the top of the fifth to cut the score to 7-6. Minton, Ray Schumacher, and Haley Coombs all drove in runs to help the Knights dig into Cortland's lead. Unfortunately, the Red Dragons were able to pull away in the bottom half of the fifth and escape with the 9-6 game one win.
  • In the second game, RBI's Nadzan, Schumacher, and Kaitlyn Schmitz helped Geneseo take an early 3-2 lead after three innings of play. A home run from Lauren Gulick extended that lead to 4-2 in the fifth.
  • Cortland was able to rally in the bottom of the sixth and tie the game, but another RBI single from Schmitz in the top of the seventh proved to be the game-winning run. Geneseo's defense was able to fend off the Red Dragons in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Sydney Bolton, Mikayla Bucci, and Amanda Audia combined to pitch the opening game, with Audia highlighting the performances with 1.1 innings pitched and zero earned runs. Gabriella Petroski and Kaitlyn Schmitz pitched the second game, with Schmitz throwing the final two innings to earn the win.
  • Schmitz was dominant at the plate in both games, going a combined 7-8 at the plate. Schmitz now leads the team in batting average at .405, while Minton is close behind at .389.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Geneseo will return to Vic Raschi Field tomorrow for a non-conference doubleheader against RIT beginning at 3 p.m.
