Softball Earns A Sweep At Nazareth

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team came out on top in both games of a doubleheader against the Nazareth Golden Flyers on Thursday afternoon with scores of 12-1 and 10-6. The Knights now sit at 11-15 overall and 6-2 in SUNYAC play on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Knights didn't take long to get on the board in game one as Brooke Fraas led off the top of the inning with a single, and was followed by Ray Schumacher who also singled to move the runner up. Audrey Minton then doubled to drive Fraas into home. Later in the inning, Olivia Coons hit an RBI groundout before Olivia Fazio reached on an error and Tara Bochu came across to score. By the end of the frame, Geneseo led by three.
  • The Golden Flyers brought a run across in the bottom of the third, but only before the Knights struck for seven in the top of the next inning. Brochu led off with a homer to right, and a single plus a walk led to Gabriella Smith singling to center and Fazio scoring on a fielding error.
  • Brooke Fraas singled up the middle to score two later in the inning, while setting the stage for Schumacher to clobber a three run homer and give Geneseo a 10-1 lead by the end of the inning.
  • The game remained quiet until the top of the fifth when the Knights added two more insurance runs off a Schumacher single that scored Fraas and Kaitlyn Schmitz. Nazareth couldn't answer in the bottom of the inning and Geneseo came away with the 12-1 victory in five innings in game one.
  • The Knights got off to a hot start in game two with a fielding error allowing Rebecca Shwartz to score in the top of the first inning.
  • Naz fought back, though, and took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two-run homer. They added on in the second with a single to center driving in another run and extending the Golden Flyers' lead to two.
  • Two more runs crossed the plate for Nazareth in the bottom of the third, and they remained up 5-1  until the top of the fifth.
  • In the top of the fifth, Geneseo put together a rally and lessened their deficit to one run off RBIs from Minton, Schmitz, and Gabriella Petroski. They eventually tied it and later retook the lead in the top of the sixth as Fraas and Petrski combined to drive in three more runs for the Knights.
  • After entering the top of the seventh up 7-5, Geneseo put the game away as Smith, Schwartz, and Fraas brought in three more runs.
  • Nazareth was able to notch a run in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't get anything more than that as the Knights finished the doubleheader sweep with a 10-6 victory.
QUICK FACTS
  • Schumacher led the team with five RBIs throughout the doubleheader while launching their second homer of the season.
