Salanger Scores 100th Career Goal, Reina 100th Point As Women's Lacrosse Falls To Cortland

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's lacrosse team hosted the Cortland Red Dragons in a rematch of the 2023 SUNYAC Championship game on Saturday afternoon. The Knights fell 13-10 in a game that saw Emily Salanger hit 100 career goals and Alaina Reina secure 100 career points for Geneseo. The Knights are now 5-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Cortland got on a hot streak early, taking a four-goal lead less than five minutes into the first quarter. A goal by Molly Brown lessened the Knights' deficit to three. Goals from Caitlyn Korzeniewski and Maddie Brown later in the period kept Geneseo within striking distance as they went to the second frame down 7-3.
  • Geneseo's Rachel Dickinson opened the second quarter with a goal less than one minute in, signaling a shift in momentum. While Cortland was able to find the back of the net once more in the period, the Knights struck for two scores (Korzeniewski and Salanger) to make the score 8-6 in favor of Cortland before halftime.
  • Out of the break, Geneseo tied up the game with two quick goals, both from the stick of Alaina Reina. Reina recorded one more to bring the Knights' total to nine, but Cortland was able to pull away before the end of the quarter to take another two-goal lead.
  • The Red Dragons extended their lead to three in the opening minute of the final quarter. Maira Brennan brought the Knights to double-digit goals, but another late score from Cortland put the game out of reach as Geneseo fell 13-10.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Salanger became just the 18th player in program history to record 100 career goals, joining teammate Molly Brown who completed the feat earlier this season.
  • Reina led the offense with four points, while Korzeniewski, Molly Brown, and Maddie Brown each added two, as well.
  • Brennan and Tricia Curran led the squad in ground balls while Sarah Ginnane came away with a team-high four caused turnovers.
  • Goaltender Emily DeJohn recorded five saves against the Red Dragons.
WHAT'S NEXT?
  • The Knights will travel to Oneonta and take on the Red Dragons in another SUNYAC contest on Thursday, Apr. 4 at 4 PM.
