Softball Drops Home Opener To Alfred

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team was unable to pull out a win at their home opener this afternoon against Alfred. The Knights now sit at 3-11 overall with the 5-3 and 11-0 losses.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first game started with a nail-biter, with Geneseo being able to tie up the game each time Alfred scored during the first two innings.
  • After Alfred scored an unearned run in the top of the first, Brooke Fraas hit an RBI single to right field to score Tori Guary.
  • Alfred was able to score another run in the top of the second, but Audrey Minton single-handedly took that lead away with a home run to left field.
  • The score remained 2-2 through the seventh inning, sending the game into extra innings.
  • In the top of the 8th, Alfred was able to put up three more runs, making the score 5-2.
  • Geneseo was not able to fight all the way back, despite Minton scoring on an RBI from Frass, ending the game with a score of 5-3.
  • In the second game, the Saxons jumped out to a quick lead in the first two innings, leading the Knights by four.
  • Despite singles from Kaitlyn Schmitz and Audrey Minton in the bottom of the 4th, the Knights were unable to score, still trailing Alfred by 4.
  • Alfred scored two more runs in the 5th, and five more in the 7th, making the score 11-0 going into the bottom of the last inning.
  • Although Lauren Gulick tried to get a rally going with a single, the Knights were unable to come back, finalizing the score at 11-0.
QUICK FACTS
  • Minton tallied Geneseo's third home run of the season, while two hits from Hannah Olejniczak helped her batting average stay at a team-leading .429.
  • Kaitlyn Schmitz threw 94 pitches in 7.1 innings pitched in the first game, only allowing three earned runs.
