CLERMONT, F.L. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team was unable to fight their way into the win column on Wednesday morning in Florida, falling to No. 12 Belhaven 8-2, and Southern Maine, 6-5. The Knights now hold a record of 2-6 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Against Belhaven, the Knights fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning, but their offense had the answer in the bottom half. Tori Guary and Amanda Audia led off with back-to-back singles, then Ray Schumacher brought in Guary with a single to cut the lead down to one. Olivia Coons was next up and drove a ground ball to second base, which allowed Audia to score and make it a tie game.
- Gabriella Petroski and the Knights defense kept Belhaven off the scoreboard for the next three innings, but with the game still tied at 2-2 heading into the final three innings, the Blazers were able to pull away for the 8-2 win.
- Against Southern Maine, the Huskies were first to score in the bottom of the second, but the Knights quickly answered in the top of the third. A double from Rebecca Shwartz set up Kaitlyn Schmitz for an RBI that scored Brooke Fraas from third to tie the game at 1-1.
- Trailing 3-1 late in the game, Geneseo put together a big offensive run in the top of the fifth. Schumacher drove in the first run of the inning with a single, then with two people on base, Tara Brochu smashed a home run to center field to give the Knights a 5-3 lead.
- Unfortunately, Southern Maine had the answer in the bottom half of the inning and ended up escaping with the 6-5 victory.
QUICK FACTS:
- Schumacher continued to have an impressive start to the season, picking up two more hits and two RBIs in today's games.
- Brochu's home run moved her to a tie with Schumacher for the team-lead in RBIs with seven.
- Schwartz went 3-4 at the plate against Southern Maine, while Guary, Audia and Brochu all recorded a multi-hit game today.
