Softball Tops Mount St. Joseph, Falls to Carroll

CLERMONT, F.L. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team took on a pair of tough games Monday evening in Flordia and came away with a big 5-1 win over Mount St. Joseph, and a tightly contested defeat to Carroll, 3-2. The Knights move to 2-4 overall on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Against Carroll, the Pioneers got on the board first, but then Ray Schumacher smacked a home run to left field to tie it at 1-1 in the second inning. Carroll answered back in the third inning, but then both pitchers and defenses bunkered down until the final inning of play.
  • After pitching a stellar six innings, Kaitlyn Schmitz took matters into her own hands at the plate in the top of the seventh down by one run and singled to right field to drive in Hannah Olejniczak to tie the game. Unfortunately, the Pioneers were able to win the game in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Geneseo bounced back from the early defeat by getting ahead of Mount St. Joseph in the first inning. Brooke Fraas led off with a single and then worked her way around the bases to eventually score on a wild pitch.
  • A few innings later, Schmitz picked up a two RBI single to give the Knights a 3-0 lead through four innings. The next inning, Haley Coombs hit a sacrifice fly and Tori Guary singled up the middle for an RBI each.
  • The Knights defense held strong down the stretch and they picked up the 5-1 victory.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Geneseo pitchers had a strong day, with Kaitlyn Schmitz throwing 6.1 innings against Carroll with only two earned runs, then Sydney Bolton throwing a complete game with just four hits and one earned run against Mount St. Joseph.
  • Schmitz recorded a multi-hit game against Carroll, while Schumacher recorded the first home run of the season for the Knights. Against Mount St. Joseph, Audrey Minton tallied three hits and scored a run.

Geneseo will take a day off before returning to action against Belhaven and the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday.
