Men's Ice Hockey Falls To Cortland In SUNYAC Semifinals

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's ice hockey team fell to the Cortland Red Dragons in the SUNYAC semifinals on Saturday night, 3-2. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Following a scoreless and hard fought first period, freshman Sean Melso took advantage of a four-on-four opportunity to score the first goal of the game 7:05 into the second period. Dakota Zarudny and Luke Panchisin picked up the assists on the goal.
  • Cortland tied the game 12:17 into the second period on a breakaway, and then took the lead with just over a minute remaining in the period.
  • Zach Purcell tied the game with a slap shot 3:06 into the third period, with Diarmad DiMurro and Nathan Poolman assisting the goal.
  • Cortland was able to take the lead back 7:11 into the third period, and their defense was able to hold off multiple attempts from the Knights to tie the game.
QUICK FACTS:
  • First-year goaltender Jacob Torgner defended the crease for the Ice Knights and recorded 26 saves on 29 shots on target.
  • Melso's goal marked his third of the year, while Purcell netted his eighth.
  • Geneseo out shot Cortland 37 to 29 through three periods of play.
