Men's Basketball Tops Alfred St., 75-70

ALFRED, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's basketball team earned a 75-70 road win at Alfred State on Thursday evening. The victory improves the Knights record to 2-2 on the season, while the Pioneers fall to 1-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Josh Garelle opened the scoring on the first possession of the game for the Knights, then Michael Gentile added a layup to make it an early 4-0 lead for Geneseo.
  • The Knights went on to extend their lead to as many as 11 points in the first 10 minutes of action. Kaelan Leak drained a three at the 12 mintute mark for Geneseo, then Sebastian Pacheco converted a layup to make it a 21-10 advantage.
  • Alfred State was able to battle back before halftime and was able to cut their deficit down to one point with just over five minutes left to play, but the Knights had the answer down the stretch and went into the second half with a 39-30 advantage.
  • The Pioneers continued to chip into Geneseo's lead in the second half, and went on to take their first lead of the game at 13-minute mark. However, the Knights rattled off eight unanswered points to regain control of the game at 59-52.
  • Alfred State cut the lead down to one point at 71-70 with 1:36 on the clock, but Garelle came up clutch for Geneseo with an and-one for a 74-70 lead with just over a minute left to play. The Knights defense held the Pioneers off the scoreboard down the stretch to secure the 75-70 win.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Robert Pericolosi led the way for Geneseo, tallying team highs in points and rebounds with 17 and eight, respectively.
  • Garelle added 15 points and seven boards, while Pacheco recorded 12 points and seven rebounds. Colin Gentile joined them in double-digit scoring with 11.
  • Geneseo dominated the paint, record 52 of their 75 points from inside the paint, compared to just 22 from Alfred State.

Geneseo will have their home opener on Saturday at 3 p.m. against St. Lawrence.
