Coach Schultz Captures 300th Career Win; Knights Beat Wilkes 5-2

GENESEO, NY: The Geneseo Ice Knights secured their first victory of the season, with a 5-2 win over Wilkes University. Coach Chis Schultz recorded his 300th career win this evening, and the Knights start the season with a 1-0-0 record.  

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • The Ice Knights converted their first powerplay opportunity of the season, with sophomore defender Sean Melso blasting a slapshot past the Wilkes goalie 13:09 in the first. Senior forwards Cooper Fensterstock and Zach Purcell had assists on the play.  

  • Less than a minute into the second-period sophomore forward Filip Wiberg found senior forward Peter Morgan to extend the Ice Knights' lead to two. Junior forward Alex Dameski with the secondary assist.  

  • Wilkes got their first 4:06 into the second. Despite this, the Ice Knights blocked three shot attempts and took a 2-1 lead into the second-period intermission.  

  • Purcell fired a slapshot through a crowd in front of the net to extend Geneseo's lead 4:48 into the third. Senior Diarmad DiMurro with the assist.  

  • Fensterstock scored his first of the year from a dish by sophomore forward Luke Panchisin 9:16 into the third. First-year forward Gabriel LaFlamme with the secondary assist. Wilkes answered back on the powerplay 13:53 into the third period. 

  • Dameski wrapped the game up with an empty netter set up by sophomore defender Sterling Wolters in the final minutes of the game.  

QUICK FACTS:  

  • Senior goaltender Adam Harris started in net for Geneseo and recorded 25 saves through three periods.  

WHAT'S NEXT:  

The Ice Knights will travel to Pittsburgh for their first UCHC Conference game at Chatham University (0-0) on Friday, November 8th, at 7 P.M.
