Softball Defeats Cortland in Thrilling 10-Inning Game Behind Schwartz's Triple

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - The Knights defeated the second seeded Cortland Red Dragons, 3-2, in ten innings in their second game of the SUNYAC Tournament on Friday. Junior infielder Rebecca Schwartz picked up the game-winning hit, crushing a triple in the top of the 10th inning with two outs. The crucial win improved Geneseo to 2-0 in the tournament, becoming the only team remaining without a loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Geneseo's senior left fielder Iris Kahris opened the top of the third with a double to center field and was driven in two batters later as junior third baseman Rebecca Schwartz hit a sac fly to right to put the Knights up by one.
  • In the top of the sixth, Geneseo put together a rally beginning with Schwartz reaching on a fielder's choice. Sophomore DP Kaitlyn Schmitz then singled to right to advance Schwartz before freshman second baseman Brooke Fraas reached on another fielder's choice which led to Schwartz coming home and the Knights going up 2-0.
  • Cortland came back to tie the game in the bottom half of the sixth as a leadoff single led to the runner coming around from third due to an error later in the inning. A single to second base on the final play of the inning drove in one runner before Fraas threw out a second Red Dragon at home to preserve the tie.
  • Neither team was able to bring a runner home in the seventh and the game went to extra innings with the score sitting at 2-2.
  • Kahris got on in the top of the tenth with a single to center before Schwartz drove her in with a huge RBI triple to right field to give the Knights a 3-2 lead.
  • Cortland was unable to score in the bottom of the frame despite getting a runner to third as Geneseo claimed the one-run victory.
QUICK FACTS
  • Kahris, Schwartz, and senior shortstop Leah VanDerwarker led the team in hitting, each recording two hits while Schwartz tallied the Knights' only two RBIs.
  • Senior pitcher Elizabeth Eberhardt pitched 5.1 innings and allowed four hits, one walk, and two unearned runs while striking out five.
  • Schmitz entered in the sixth inning and closed out the game in relief, pitching 4.2 innings while allowing three hits, no walks, no runs and striking out one as she improved her season record to 6-4.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Knights will return to action on Saturday, where they will take on the winner of New Paltz and Cortland at 11 a.m., who play in the final game of the day on Friday.
