NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team won its third consecutive State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) championship on Saturday afternoon, as the Knights defeated New Paltz, 4-3, and Buffalo St., 1-0, to complete their unbeaten run through the tournament as the No. 3 seed. The championship marks the program's third straight championship and fourth since 2018.
GAME 1: GENESEO 4, NEW PALTZ 3
- The Knights struggled to get the offense going early on, and found themselves trailing 2-0 after three innings of play. In the top of the sixth, the Hawks tacked on another run to their lead.
- The bats woke up in the bottom of the sixth for Geneseo, after a leadoff walk from Leah VanDerwarker got the comeback rally started. Rebecca Schwartz quickly drove in VanDerwarker with a triple, and then Kaitlyn Schmitz followed it up with a double to cut the deficit to one.Â
- Later in the inning, Brooke Fraas reached on an error, then smart base running led the Gabriella Smith scoring from second and tying the game at 3-3. Olivia Fazio then drove in the eventual game-winning run with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring the Fraas.
- Sydney Bolton and the Geneseo defense then took care of business in the top of the seventh, retiring the first three batters for New Paltz to advance to the championship game.
GAME 2: GENESEO 1, BUFFALO ST. 0
- The Knights impressive pitching continued into the championship game, as Elizabeth Eberhardt threw her second complete game shutout against the Bengals in the tournament.
- In the bottom of the third inning, Leah VanDerwarker picked up a clutch one-out double, and then Kaitlyn Schmitz brought her home with a single to center field in what proved to be the game-winning run.
- The Bengals threatened to score in the top of the fourth, but Eberhardt worked her way out of a bases loaded jam. In the top of the fifth, Eberhardt once again stranded multiple base runners.
- Geneseo was able to hang on for the one-run victory, retiring the final six batters of the game in the sixth and seventh inning.
QUICK FACTS
- Eberhardt threw 19.1 innings in the tournament and only allowed two runs while picking up two wins.
- Schwartz had another clutch performance at the plate, driving in a run in both games today.
- Schwartz was named the Tournament MVP, while Eberhardt, VanDerwarker and Schmitz joined her on the All-Tournament team.
