Softball Opens Up SUNYAC Tournament with 3-0 Win

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - Senior pitcher Elizabeth Eberhardt pitched a complete-game shutout to earn her 12th victory of the season as the Knights took down Buffalo State, 3-0, in the opening game of the SUNYAC Tournament on Thursday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the bottom of the first inning, a walk by sophomore DP Kaitlyn Schmitz followed by a single from freshman second baseman Brooke Fraas set up a big two-RBI single to right off the bat of senior right fielder Samantha Martz. The Knights carried their 2-0 lead all the way into the bottom of the fifth.
  • In the fifth inning, senior shortstop Leah VanDerwarker doubled to get things going in what would end up being the Knights' only extra-base hit of the game. Junior third baseman Rebecca Schwartz followed the double with a single to center, which drove VanDerwarker home.
  • Eberhardt was able to get out of a jam with two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh to seal the 3-0 victory for the Knights over the Bengals.
QUICK FACTS
  • Schwartz led the team in hitting, going 2-3 while adding the game's final RBI.
  • Eberhardt improved to 12-2 on the season while allowing no runs on five hits with six strikeouts and no walks allowed.
  • The Knights have won each of their last seven SUNYAC Tournament openers. Geneseo is 15-4 in SUNYAC Tournament play since 2018, winning the conference title in 2018, 2021, and 2022.
WHAT'S NEXT?
