Softball Falls at Oneonta in a Pair of Close Games

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Geneseo dropped both of their matchups against Oneonta Saturday, Apr. 8. The Knights fell 5-3 in the first game before the Red Dragons walked off the second and won 7-6. Geneseo's season record now sits at 8-9-1 overall and 1-3 in the SUNYAC after the doubleheader. 

GAME 1 - Oneonta 5, Geneseo 3
  • A first inning RBI single by sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Schmitz brought senior shortstop Leah VanDerwarker home from second put the Knights up early. Right after, freshman infielder Brooke Fraas put Geneseo up by three after hitting her first home run as a Knight. 
  • Oneonta answered in the bottom of the second after putting together a rally consisting of a walk, triple, and single to shorten their deficit to one. 
  • The Red Dragons took the lead in the bottom of the fourth off of a three-run home run and were able to keep Geneseo off the base paths for the majority of the next two innings. 
  • The Knights got a runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh but were unable to drive any runs across the plate as they fell 5-3 in game one of the doubleheader. 

GAME 2 - Oneonta 7, Geneseo 6
  • Oneonta took their first lead of the back-and-forth game in the bottom of the opening inning with an RBI double and two-run home run putting them up by three.
  • The bats went quiet until the top of the fifth, when the Knights put together a lengthy string of hits with junior third baseman Rebecca Schwartz hitting an RBI triple to score VanDerwarker before Schmitz and Fraas each added RBI doubles. Freshman Bella Nadzan hit a sac fly to center field to conclude the inning's rally and put Geneseo ahead 4-3.
  • A two-run homer by the Red Dragons put the team back ahead 5-4 in the bottom of the inning. 
  • The Knights answered immediately, scoring their final two runs of the game in the top of the sixth with Schwartz reaching on an error, which scored senior Audrey Minton, followed by Schmitz hitting a sac fly to right to drive in VanDerwarker once again. 
  • Oneonta came back though, and tied the game in the final inning on a wild pitch before walking it off on a single through the left side to take game two 7-6. 

QUICK FACTS 
  • Fraas finished with a team-high four hits between the two games, while also tacking on three RBIs and one home run. 
  • Schmitz added another three RBIs while VanDerwarker tallied three runs for the Knights. 
  • Geneseo's pitchers allowed 12 runs over 12 innings on 15 hits while recording eight strikeouts over the two games.

The Knights will travel again, this time to Fredonia, to face the Blue Devils in a doubleheader on Friday, Apr. 14 with the first game slated to begin at 3 p.m.
