Softball Takes a Pair from Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team bounced back from a tough opening weekend of SUNYAC with a doubleheader sweep of Fredonia. The pair of victories improved the Knights to 10-9-1 overall and 3-3 in SUNYAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the opener, Kaitlyn Schmitz got the scoring started by driving in Leah VanDerwarker with a triple. The Knights then extended the lead in the top of the third with an RBI single from Samantha Martz and a bases loaded walk drawn by Olivia Fazio.
  • Kaitlyn Schmitz was on the mound for Geneseo and kept the Blue Devils off the scoreboard as the offense tacked on four more runs in the top of the fourth, powered by a three-run homer from Martz.
  • Geneseo extended its lead to as high as 10-0 after the top of the sixth, and then Fredonia tallied a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. However, it wasn't enough to mount a comeback and the Knights pulled out the 10-2 victory.
  • It was another hot start for Geneseo in the second game, as Brooke Fraas hit an RBI double and then scored later in the first inning to make it a quick 2-0 advantage.
  • Fredonia went on to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third inning, but the Knights quickly responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.
  • Elizabeth Eberhardt and the Geneseo defense then held strong for the remaining innings and pulled out a 7-3 win.

QUICK FACTS
  • In the opening game, Martz posted five RBI's to lead the offense, while Schmitz went a perfect 4-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Schmitz also threw all six innings on the mound while striking out six batters and only allowing five hits.
  • In the second game, both VanDerwarker and Rebecca Schwartz recorded two RBIs, while Fraas went 4-4 at the plate. Eberhardt threw all seven innings for the Knights, and tallied her sixth win of the season.
