Softball Finishes SUNYAC Weekend with Doubleheader Split at Buffalo St.

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Geneseo traveled to Buffalo State and split their two-game set against the Bengals on Saturday, Apr. 15. The Knights fell in game one in a close 5-4 walk-off defeat before blowing game two wide open and taking a 15-1 victory in five innings. The team's record sits at 11-10-1 overall and 4-4 in conference play after the doubleheader.

GAME 1 - Buffalo State 5, Geneseo 4
  • The offense started early for both squads with singles from senior shortstop Leah VanDerwarker and junior third baseman Rebecca Schwartz, setting up an RBI sac fly by sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Schmitz to put the Knights up by one in the top of the first.
  • An RBI single to left center that scored a runner from second tied the game for the Bengals in the bottom of the inning.
  • Buffalo State took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the third inning with a fielder's choice groundout to the shortstop scoring a run from third.
  • The Bengals extended their advantage in the bottom of the fifth after a double to center allowed two runners to cross the plate to put the team up 4-1.
  • The Knights brought the game to within two in the top of the sixth when freshman second baseman Brooke Fraas scored on an error by the pitcher.
  • With their backs against the wall, Geneseo was able to tie the game in the top of the seventh off of a two-run double by Schmitz that scored senior left fielder Iris Kahris and VanDerwarker.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the final frame, though, the Bengals were able to walk-off the game and come away with the 5-4 victory with an infield single.

GAME 2 - Geneseo 15, Buffalo State 1 (5 inn.)
  • VanDerwarker got the scoring going in the top of the second inning with a single through the left side that brought senior first baseman Audrey Minton home from third.
  • The Knights put up a seven-spot in the third inning with RBIs coming off the bats of Fraas, senior right fielder Samantha Martz, Minton, sophomore catcher Tara Brochu, VanDerwarker, and Schmitz to give Geneseo an 8-0 lead.
  • In the top of the fourth, a double from Brochu, single off the bat of VanDerwarker, and sac fly by Schmitz combined to drive in four runs for the Knights.
  • Buffalo State scored their only run of the contest in the bottom of that same inning with a single driving a runner home from second base.
  • Geneseo tacked on its final three runs in the top of the fifth with center fielder Gabriella Smith scoring fellow freshman left fielder Bella Nadzan before VanDerwarker singled through the left side to score Minton. Before the inning came to a close, sophomore Hannah Recine grounded out but drove in Brochu from third to put the team up 15-1.
  • The Bengals were unable to match the Knights' offense as the game concluded after the bottom of the fifth due to the run rule.
