Softball Splits Doubleheader at New Paltz, Holds Hawks to Four Runs

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team split a doubleheader against the New Paltz Hawks in their first SUNYAC matchup of the year on Friday, Apr. 7. Geneseo fell in extra innings during the first game before coming back to take the second. The Knights currently sit at 8-7-1 on the season after the two matchups.

GAME 1 - New Paltz 2, Geneseo 1 (8 inn.)
  • Both teams struggled to get players on base before a New Paltz double to left drove in the game's first run in the bottom of the third.
  • The Knights tied the game in the top of the seventh after senior infielder Leah VanDerwarker reached base on an error to lead off the inning. A sacrifice hit by junior infielder Rebecca Schwartz moved VanDerwarker to third before sophomore designated player Kaitlyn Schmitz singled to left to drive in the run.
  • The Hawks were unable to finish it off in the bottom of the inning despite a leadoff single and the game moved into extra innings.
  • Geneseo couldn't get anything going in the top of the eighth, allowing New Paltz to walk-off the game in the bottom half of the frame on a single to center field.
GAME 2 - Geneseo 5, New Paltz 2
  • Geneseo came back in game two and immediately got a rally going in the top of the first. Singles by VanDerwarker and Schmitz set up an RBI grounder by freshman infielder Brooke Fraas to put the Knights up 1-0, right before senior outfielder Samantha Martz reached on an error to drive in another.
  • New Paltz was able to cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the second with a double to center.
  • The Knights erupted in the fifth inning, getting five runners on base despite only recording two hits, and eventually scored three runs on RBIs from Schmitz, Fraas, and Martz.
  • With their backs against the wall, a leadoff double by the Hawks started a small rally in the bottom of the seventh with a run crossing the plate on a single to center field. The Knights were able to close it out though, and took the 5-2 victory in game two.

QUICK FACTS
  • Fraas led the charge on offense, going 3-7 at the plate on the day.
  • VanDerwarker crossed the plate a team-high three times while Fraas and Martz each recorded two RBIs.
  • Senior Elizabeth Eberhardt was lights out in the second game of the doubleheader throwing all seven innings while allowing only two runs on seven hits and striking out four to get the win and improve her record to 5-1 on the year.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Knights will travel to Oneonta to take on the Red Dragons in a doubleheader tomorrow Saturday, Apr. 8 with the first game starting at 12 p.m.
