Softball Earns a Pair of Dominant Wins over Brockport

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team hosted a doubleheader against Brockport on Thursday, April, and won both games comfortably, improving their record to 17-14-1 overall and 8-6 in SUNYAC play. 
 
GAME 1 - Geneseo 6, Brockport 0
  • Geneseo started off with a hot start, scoring five runs in the second inning. The Knights were able to claim the lead with an RBI single from senior outfielder Olivia Fazio, scoring freshman infielder Brooke Fraas.
  • Fazio's hit was followed by another RBI single by junior catcher/first baseman Lauren Gulick, scoring senior utility player Samantha Martz.
  • Geneseo scored three more runs following the pair of hits, two on an error, and one off a walk.
  • The final run of the game came in the fourth inning, as junior infielder Rebecca Schwartz flied out to right field, allowing senior infielder Leah VanDerwarker to score from third. 
 
GAME 2 - Geneseo 9, Brockport 1 (6 inn.)
  • Again, the Knights were off to a quick start. Their first run came in the opening inning, as VanDerwarker was able to score on a wild pitch.
  • The Knights scored again in the second, as VanDerwarker doubled to right, allowing Gulick to score from second base.
  • No more runs were scored until the fifth inning when Geneseo doubled their 2-0 lead. Sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Schmitz grounded to shortstop, allowing VanDerwarker to score. Martz was then able to join the party with an RBI single, scoring Schwartz.
  • In the sixth, Brockport scored one run, bringing the score to 4-1 in favor of Geneseo. However, the Knights were about to bounce back and scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Their five hits in the inning pushed the lead to 9-1, ending the game due to the run rule.
QUICK FACTS
  • The Geneseo pitchers were dominant in both games, as Elizabeth Eberhardt threw a complete game shuotut in the opener, only allowing four hits in her ninth win of the season.
  • In the second game, Kaitlyn Schmitz threw all six innings and only allowed five hits to get the win.

Geneseo will travel to Ithaca on Wednesday, May 3 for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
