ALFRED, N.Y. - Geneseo kicked off their first games after Florida with one win and one tie against the Alfred University Saxons. The first game was won in 6 innings with a score of 10-2. The second game ended in a tie (3-3) after the 6th inning due to snowy weather.
GAME 1 - Geneseo 10, Alfred University 2 (6 inn.)
- Alfred got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning, as they brought around one run to take the early lead.
- A single ripped through up the middle by senior outfielder Olivia Fazio scored freshman second baseman Brooke Frass and put senior outfielder Samantha Martz on third. Junior DP Lauren Gulick singled to left center, scoring Samantha Martz. Sophomore catcher Tara Brochu took one over the fence to clear the bases for a 3-run homerun, putting the Knights up 5-1 in the top of the second.
- The Saxons tried to make up some runs in the bottom of the third, but they were stopped short, scoring only one run on a single to right field.
- Brochu continued to have an impressive game at the plate in the top of the sixth with a single down the right field line, scoring Fazio on the throw. Senior third baseman Rebecca Schwartz helped to blow the game wide open with a double to center field scoring senior shortstop Leah VanDerwarker, Tara Brochu, and Sophomore pinch runner Hannah Olejnicza. Sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Schmitz put the Knights within reach of the run rule with a double to right center, bringing in Rebecca Schwartz, putting the Knights up 10-2.
- The Knights held the Saxons to 0 runs in the bottom of the sixth, forcing the run-rule victory.
- Senior pitcher Elizabeth Eberhardt allowed two runs in six innings on eight hits, while striking out five in the win.
GAME 2 - Geneseo 3, Alfred University 3 (6 inn.)
- Geneseo got the bats going right away with a single from senior outfielder Samantha Martz in the top of the first, scoring sophomore DP Kaitlyn Schmitz and senior shortstop Leah VanDerwarker. The Knights hold the Saxons to zero runs in the bottom of the first to put the Knights up 2-0 going into the second.
- A single ripped to left field by Schmitz scored senior Iris Kahris with Geneseo's final run of the game in the top of the second.
- In the bottom of the fourth the Saxons scored for the first time in six innings with a ground out to short, scoring a runner from third. Another ground out scored a runner from third, bringing the Saxons within one in the bottom of the fourth.
- The bottom of the fifth inning brought a tie with a double to left field that scored a runner.
- With just one inning to go, the game had to be called due to the snowy weather. The snow-covered Knights went home with one unquestionable win and one chilly tie.
- Junior pitcher Sydney Bolton started the game, allowing two runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings. Senior pitcher Mattie Woodard came in during the third inning, allowing one run on two hits in 2.1 innings.
The Knights will travel to Ithaca this weekend for a doubleheader beginning at 12 on Saturday, April 1.
