Men's Lacrosse Avenges Last Years Title Game, Knocks Off Cortland, 18-12

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's lacrosse team got the redemption they were looking for in a rematch of last years SUNYAC championship game, as they dominated Cortland at College Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Knights never trailed in the game and won 18-12 to improve to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in SUNYAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Geneseo offense was firing on all cylinders against Cortland. That started early in the first quarter when Sophomore Jimmy Atkinson got the first goal less than two minutes into the action. The Knights were quick to back that up by ending the quarter with a 7-2 lead, with each goal being scored by a different Knight.
  • The momentum did not waiver for Geneseo in the second quarter as Senior Liam Kassl put the eighth goal on the scoreboard early on. The Knights were able to tally four goals total, as well as keeping the Red Dragons to only two, making it an 11-4 advantage at halftime.
  • Coming out of halftime, Cortland began to find their rhythm with three straight goals within three minutes of each other. Once again, Atkinson was able to shut that down, stopping their run and pushing the score separation to five. A couple minutes before the final quarter, Robert Boneillo got into the mix, scoring a goal and making it 15-8.
  • The Geneseo defense stayed strong throughout the game giving up a maximum of four goals in two of the quarters. Cortland was able to string together a couple goals in the last quarter, however, Geneseo continued their excellence on the offensive end and ended the game 18-12 against the reigning SUNYAC Champions.
