Softball Closes Out Florida Trip With Wins Over Carroll and Marywood

CLERMONT, FL. - Geneseo earned a pair of victories in their final day in Florida, defeating Carroll University 8-2, and taking down Marywood University 8-0 in six innings on Friday, Mar. 17. The pair of wins moves Geneseo to 6-6 on the season.

GAME 1 - Geneseo 8, Carroll 2
  • Carroll got on the board in the opening inning, with a leadoff walk turning into a run on a throwing error.
  • Geneseo responded quickly with a string of two-out singles in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Senior outfielders Samantha Martz and Olivia Fazio drove in one run each as the Knights took a 2-1 advantage. 
  • The Pioneers tied the game at two in the top of the fourth, but it didn't last long as junior infielder Rebecca Schwartz singled to center to bring sophomore infielder Hannah Olejniczak home and give the Knights the lead once again. 
  • Martz' second RBI of the day scored freshman infielder Brooke Fraas in the bottom of the fifth as Geneseo's lead was extended to two. 
  • The Knights blew the game wide open in the sixth, scoring four RBIs on hits from Fraas, Martz (2), and Fazio. 
  • Carroll was unable to put any runs on the board in the seventh, sealing the 8-2 victory for Geneseo.

GAME 2 - Geneseo 8, Marywood 0 (6 inn.)
  • The Knights put up five runs in the top of the first, taking a commanding lead from the get-go. The action started with senior infielder Leah VanDerwarker hitting a leadoff home run, her first of the year, before hits from Fraas and Martz, and a walk from sophomore catcher Tara Brochu brought in more runs for Geneseo.
  • The scoring went quiet until Geneseo struck again in the fourth, with sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Schmitz singling to center to score Schwartz from second to give the team a 6-0 lead. 
  • The Knights extended their lead to eight in the top of the sixth via singles from Fraas and Martz bringing VanDerwarker and Schmitz home.
  • Geneseo finished off the game in the bottom of the sixth with an emphatic double play to end their game and trip to Florida on a high note with a 8-0 run-rule victory over the Pacers. 

QUICK FACTS 
  • Three Knights recorded multiple RBIs on the day with Martz driving in seven, Fraas getting three, and Fazio bringing in two runners.
  • Geneseo's pitchers Schmitz and senior Elizabeth Eberhardt each pitched a complete game combining for two runs over 13 innings while allowing 11 hits and striking out 14.

The Knights will come home and take a small break before traveling to Alfred University to face the Saxons in a doubleheader on Wednesday, Mar. 29 starting at 3 P.M.
