Softball Takes Down Franklin & Marshall, Falls to Rowan

CLERMONT, F.L. - SUNY Geneseo split their doubleheader on Friday, defeating Franklin & Marshall College 16-7, while falling to Rowan University 10-2 at Legends Way Ballfields on Friday.

GAME 1 - Geneseo 16, Franklin & Marshall 7
  • The Knights got on the board quickly, putting together a 2-out rally in the top of the first. Sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Schmitz got it going with a double before reaching home on a steal attempt from Brooke Fraas going to second. Another double, this time by senior outfielder Samantha Martz, brought in their second run. Senior outfielder Olivia Fazio came up next and hit an RBI single which allowed Martz to cross the plate and put Geneseo up 3-0 by the end of the frame.
  • Franklin & Marshall had it all clicking on the offensive side as the game began with their first eight batters each recording a hit. The Knights were eventually able to get out of the inning but not before falling down 7-3 after allowing ten hits.
  • Geneseo got three runs back in the top of the second with junior infielder Rebecca Schwartz hitting an RBI single to center to bring senior outfielder Iris Kahris home from second. A double steal which scored freshman infielder Brooke Fraas brought the Knights back within one run of the Diplomats.
  • The Knights retook the lead in the top of the fourth with Fraas tripling to right before Martz drove in Fraas with her third RBI of the game.
  • Geneseo kept the onslaught going in the fifth, highlighted by Schwartz hitting her first home run of the season. The team extended their lead to four in the inning.
  • RBIs by Fraas, Martz, Fazio, and sophomore catcher Haley Coombs in the top of the seventh finished off the Knights' emphatic 16-7 victory.
GAME 2 - Rowan 10, Geneseo 2 (5 inn.)
  • Geneseo struck early once again, scoring in the bottom of the first when Schmitz singled through the right side to bring in freshman infielder Bella Nadzan from third.
  • The tides began to change as Rowan rallied to score eight runs on six hits in the top of the third to take their first lead of the game.
  • The Profs put together a string of baserunners in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 9-1.
  • The Knights were able to get a run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by sophomore catcher Tara Brochu that scored freshman infielder Gabriella Smith
  • Rowan added one more run to their total in the top of the fifth and Geneseo was not able to answer, falling to the Profs 10-2 after five innings in a run-rule defeat.
