Softball Picks Up A Pair Of Victories In Florida

CLERMONT, Fl. - Geneseo earned a pair of victories during their second day in Florida, defeating New England College 10-2 in six innings, and Belhaven University 4-2 on Sunday, Mar. 12. 

GAME 1 - Geneseo 10, New England 2 (6 inn.)
  • New England got the scoring started in the top of the third inning, as they brought around two runs to take the lead. 
  • A single ripped through the left side by senior outfielder Olivia Fazio scored sophomore DP Kaitlyn Schmitz from third to bring Geneseo back within one in the fourth.
  • The Knights blew the scoring wide open in the bottom of the fifth by bringing six runs across. Senior outfielder Samantha Martz reached on a fielder's choice, scoring sophomore infielder Hannah Olejniczak to tie the game at two. Junior infielder Rebecca Schwartz then doubled to right center to bring senior outfielder Leah VanDerwarker home to take the lead. 
  • The most damage was done by Schmitz who hammered a three-run home run in the inning, her second of the season, to give the team a 6-2 advantage before sophomore catcher Tara Brochu tacked on the final run of the frame with an RBI single to right. 
  • Schmitz (one) and senior infielder Audrey Minton (two) each added RBIs in the bottom of the sixth to give Geneseo a 10-2 run-rule victory. 
  • Senior Elizabeth Eberhardt allowed two runs in six innings on seven hits while striking out ten in the win. 

GAME 2 - Geneseo 4, Belhaven 2
  • The Knights got on the board early with freshman outfielder Brooke Fraas hitting a two-RBI triple to drive in Schmitz and Schwartz to give the team the lead in the top of the first. 
  • Belhaven tied it up in the bottom of the frame before the scoring went quiet for the next four innings. 
  • Geneseo finally broke the tie in the top of the sixth, with senior outfielder Iris Kahris getting into scoring position before VanDerwarker doubled to bring in the run. 
  • Senior infielder Audrey Minton added an insurance run for the Knights in the final inning by reaching on a fielder's choice to bring Schmitz home and extend their lead to 4-2. 
  • Schmitz got the win while pitching a complete game and allowing two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. 

QUICK FACTS 
  • Schmitz finished with a team-high six hits on the day, going 3-for-4 in each game. Her hits included three doubles and a home run and she brought in four RBIs through the two games. 
  • Fraas, VanderWarker, Schwartz, and Kahris each added multiple hits as well. 
  • Eberhardt and Schmitz combined for 13 innings of four-run ball while allowing 15 hits and striking out 14.

The Knights will face Springfield College in a doubleheader on Monday starting at 9 A.M. in Clermont, Fl.
