Softball Earns Walk Off Win To Split First Doubleheader Of The Season

KISSIMMEE, F.L. - SUNY Geneseo freshman infielder Brooke Fraas hit a walk-off single to help the Knights split a pair of games at the Fortune Road Athletic Complex on Saturday. The doubleheader action marked the first games of the season for the Knights.

GAME 1 - Western New England 6, Geneseo 3
  • Senior infielder Leah VanDerwarker opened up the action for the Knights with a single before scoring on a fielders' choice hit by sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Schmitz. The hit also allowed senior outfielder Samantha Martz to advance to third before scoring on a double steal to put the team up 2-0 at the end of the first.
  • Western New England wasn't able to get much going until the bottom of the fifth when multiple singles and a Geneseo error led to the Golden Bears cutting the deficit to one.
  • A sixth inning rally drove in five for WNE, giving them a 6-2 lead into the final inning. A single by Martz drove in VanDerwarker in the seventh, but the Knights were unable to put anything else together and fell in the season opener, 6-3.
GAME 2 - Geneseo 5, University of Wisconsin - River Falls 4
  • UW - River Falls got on the board early with a string of hits resulting in a first-inning, 1-0 lead. However, a pair of strikeouts by senior pitcher Mattie Woodard left two runners on base and got Geneseo out of the jam.
  • The Falcons tacked on another run in the second, but the Knights answered immediately with Fraas being hit by a pitch to start the inning, before a sac bunt by senior outfielder Olivia Fazio moved her into scoring position. Sophomore catcher Haley Coombs then hit an RBI single to second, driving in Fraas to bring the team's deficit back to one.
  • A third-inning sac fly by Fraas brought senior infielder Leah VanDerwarker around third, tying the game at two.
  • UW - River Falls retook the lead by bringing two more runs home in the top of the fourth, but Geneseo came back to tie it once again after a two-run home run by sophomore DH Kaitlyn Schmitz.
  • Woodard was able to get out of a bases-loaded jam put together by the Falcons in the top of the seventh before the Knights took over on offense.
  • VanDerwarker led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk before a sac bunt by senior outfielder Samantha Martz moved her to second. An RBI single by Fraas scored VanDerwarker and led Geneseo to the 5-4 victory.

QUICK FACTS
  • VanDerwarker went 2-6 while scoring four runs for the Knights on the day.
  • Schmitz led the team with 3 RBIs on Saturday.
