OSWEGO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's ice hockey team survived a third period comeback from Oswego on Friday night, and pulled out a 4-3 overtime win behind a game-winning goal from
Stefan Miklakos. The win improved the Knights to 14-5-2 overall 8-3-1 in SUNYAC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Knights came out of the gates hot, scoring twice in the opening period for a 2-0 advantage. Greg Koutsomitis put Geneseo on the board first with a goal off an assist by Nathan Poolman, and then Miklakos added another goal with less than five minutes to go in the period.
- Poolman added to the Knights lead in the second period, scoring off an assist from Koutsomitis and Cooper Fensterstock. With Geneseo holding onto a three-goal lead, senior Matt Petizian and the defense continued to hold strong and keep the Lakers off the scoreboard heading to the final 20 minutes.
- Oswego netted two power play goals in the third period as they were able to pull the game to a tie score with under five minutes left to play. Petizian was able to make three saves in the closing minutes to keep the score tied and headed to overtime.
- An early penalty from the Knights put them at a heavy disadvantage in overtime, but five saves from Petizian and a blocked shot by Diarmad DiMurro kept the game tied and Miklakos was able to bury the game-winner off an assist from Tommy Winn.
QUICK FACTS
- Petizian tallied 53 saves in the win, marking a new single-game career high and tying him for fourth all-time for saves in a game.
- The pair of goals from Miklakos moved him into a tie for the team lead in goals this season at 11, while Koutsomitis notched his second of the season and Poolman recorded his first.
- The victory avenged the Knights loss earlier in the season to Oswego, and moved them to 8-1-1 in the last 10 matchups against the Lakers.
