Geneseo, N.Y.- The No.7 SUNY Geneseo men's hockey team earned an impressive home victory against the No. 10 Skidmore College Thoroughbreds on Friday night. The Ice Knights were led by first-year goaltender
Jacob Torger's 32-save performance to improve to 12-2-0 on the season and remain 6-1-0 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED-
- Skidmore found the back of the net with 4:52 left in the first period. The Skidmore forward buried a rebound to take a 1-0 lead into the first-period intermission.
- The Ice Knights came out of the second period strong. Sophomore forward Alex Dameski scored his 9th goal of the season on an Ice Knight powerplay. Dameski slapped in a one-timer on a pass from Tyson Gilmour. Alex Wilson was credited for the secondary assist.
- Geneseo snatched the lead for the first time in the game through a goal scored by Dakota Zarudny. The Ice Knight defender picked up the puck in the slot and took a wrist shot that found the top corner of the net. Luke Panchisin and Greg Koutsomitis were credited with the assists.
- Junior forward Cooper Fensterstock extended Geneseo's lead 10:19 into the third period. Fensterstock picked the pocket of the Skidmore defender and took a wicked wrist shot that made it over the goaltender's shoulder and into the net.
- Skidmore scored two minutes later on the power play to make the score Geneseo 3, Skidmore 2.
- Geneseo junior forward Peter Morgan added breathing room for the Ice Knights to extend the lead to two. With 3:34 left in the final period, Morgan glided straight from the bench to pick up the puck and backhanded it past the goalie. Zach Rehbaum and Tyson Gilmour with assists on the play.
- Luke Panchisin added another powerplay goal for the Ice Knights with 1:13 left in the game. Cooper Fensterstock and Peter Morgan with assists on the play.
QUICK FACTS-
- Friday's match-up between the Ice Knights and Thoroughbreds was only the sixth meeting all-time between the two programs. Geneseo has a record of 4-1-1 against Skidmore in those match-ups.
- Peter Morgan's two-point performance makes him Geneseo's leader in points 14 games into the season. In those 14 games, Morgan has recorded four goals and 12 assists, giving him a total of 16 points on the year.
- Sophomore defenseman Dakota Zarudny's presence on the ice led to goals in Friday's game. Zarundny earned a game-high +3 plus/minus, scored one goal on three shots on target, and blocked one shot.
