GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's basketball team fell to the visiting New Paltz Hawks, 71-56, in their first SUNYAC matchup of the season on Friday night. The Knights' now sit at 3-2 to start their 2023-24 campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Knights worked to a 12-6 lead midway through the first quarter off of consecutive scores from sophomore guard Maggie McGrane, senior forward Kerry Dennin, and freshman forward Audrey Hintz. A free throw by Dennin cemented the team's lead at the end of the frame as they went to the second quarter up 15-13.
- A back-and-forth battle in the second led to a tie with 6:37 left. An eleven-point run by the Hawks gave them a big advantage, but a layup by Dennin with four seconds left gave the Knights some momentum heading to halftime.
- Graduate guard Hannah Stockman opened the second half with a three-pointer to bring Geneseo back within seven points. Points by Dennin and senior guard Kiley Snow kept the offense alive, but New Paltz went into the final quarter with a 14-point lead.
- Junior guard Mackenzie Reigle opened the fourth with a pull-up jumper, and the Knights eventually cut the lead to just five points at 59-54 with 4:09 remaining in the game. Unfortunately, the Hawks were able to regain the momentum and ultimately pulled away for the 71-56 victory.
