Women's Volleyball Nearly Completes Comeback, Falls To New Paltz In 5

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's volleyball team was defeated by New Paltz on Saturday, Oct. 7. After dropping the first two sets, the Knights nearly completed a big comeback but ultimately fell, 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 20-25, 15-11. Geneseo now sits at 7-9 overall and 3-1 in SUNYAC play this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Geneseo went on a four-point scoring run early in the first, led by Madison Popielski, who was serving. New Paltz was able to come back and tie the Knights at six. Geneseo came within one point late but dropped the first set 25-23.
  • The second set began with the Hawks taking a quick 9-5 lead, but the Knights fought back to go ahead 13-12. Despite Geneseo's offensive efforts, New Paltz went on a four-point run to finish out the set with a 25-22 victory.
  • A four-point serving run from senior setter Jenna Garvey gave Geneseo a 6-2 lead that they carried throughout the entirety of the third set. A kill by senior outside hitter Madison Popielski set her up to finish out the set on the serve and she delivered an ace to give the Knights the 25-21 win to avoid a shutout.
  • In the fourth set, New Paltz came out hot by taking a 5-1 lead, but the Knights, behind a serving run from senior libero Cecilia Dignan, came back to tie the set up at five. Another short run by Dignan towards the end of the set led to middle blocker Madison Gamberg tallying a kill to put the Hawks away, 25-20.
  • In the fifth and final set, Geneseo took a 3-0 lead that they held onto until the Hawks came back to go on top 9-8. Another kill by Popielski brought the Knights to within one point late, but it was not enough as Geneseo fell 15-11.
