BUFFALO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's swimming and diving team began its 2023-24 season with an impressive 243-57 win over Cortland at Erie Community College.
The Knights opened up the meet on a high note, with the team of Chester Pergan III,
Terran Cheng,
Ben Ludlow, and
Jordan Nielsen taking first place in the 200 yard medley relay. The Knights took first with a time of 1:36.81, while the team of
Casey Connors,
Alex Palmer,
Connor Baird and
Gannon Moore taking second at 1:38.91. Following the strong relay performance was Colin Babbit earning the top spot in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:17.98. Babbit turned right around and competed in the next event, the 200 yard freestyle, and took second with a time of 1:51.11, while teammate
Christopher Weber earned first at 1:50.79.
Pergan added his second win of the day in the 100 yard backstroke, earning the top spot at 55.30 while Connors touched second at 56.06 and
Chris Varrichio in third at 56.63. In the 100 yard breaststroke, Palmer earned nine points for Geneseo with a time of 59.59, while
Jake Nielsen was right behind him at 59.79. Baird tallied another win for Geneseo in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 1:59.28, while Ludlow was in second at 1:59.61.
Jordan Nielsen claimed first in the 50 yard freestyle, while his brother
Jake Nielsen followed it up in the 100 yard freestyle with a first place finish at 47.14.
Ludlow claimed another victory for Geneseo in the 200 yard backstroke with an impressive performance and time of 2:01.48. Palmer recorded his second win of the meet in the 200 yard breaststroke, touching the wall with a time of 2:12.49 with teammates Cheng and
Jordan Nielsen in second and third, respectively. Babbitt returned to action in the distance events with a first place finish in the 500 yard freestyle at 4:58.81.
Brian Pabisch earned an exciting win in the 100 yard butterfly, out-touching his teammate
Jack Keene 53.35 to 53.49 seconds. Palmer returned to the top of the podium once again for Geneseo, taking first in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:00.98. In the final swimming event of the meet, the team of
Christopher Weber,
Jordan Nielsen,
Ben Ludlow, and
Jose Santana took first in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:29.18. They barely beat out teammates
Gannon Moore,
Casey Connors,
Alex Stoker, and
Brian Pabisch in second at 1:29.24.
In the dive events,
Trent Makowiec took first in both the 1 and 3 meter dives. Makowiec scored 297.60 in the one-meter dive and 298.95 in the three-meter dive.
Greg Meder took second in both, scoring 253.85 and 293.80, respectively.
The Knights will return to the pool on October 21 when they host Alfred St. at Erie Community College at 1:30 p.m.
