Men's Soccer Upends #15 Cortland Behind Two Goals From Arilotta

GENESEO, N.Y.- The SUNY Geneseo men's soccer team earned a huge home victory against #15 SUNY Cortland in a SUNYAC (State University of New York Athletic Conference) clash on Saturday afternoon. The win improved the Knights record to 6-5-2 and 2-3 in conference play, while handing the Red Dragons their first conference defeat of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Geneseo Knights struck first in the 13th minute on headed redirection by graduate student Justin Arilotta. Junior defender Benjamin Sanchez threw the ball in from the sidelines into Cortland's box and Arilotta was able to head the ball into the back of the net.
  • Arilotta would extend the Knights' lead to 2-0 seven minutes later with a spectacular individual effort. Arilotta stole the ball from the Cortland defender and then blasted the ball with his right foot into the top corner of the net in the 20th minute.
  • SUNY Cortland scored in the 59th minute on a tap-in finish that was crossed in by a Cortland forward.
  • The Knights played lockdown defense in the rest of the second half, keeping the Red Dragons from equalizing the score.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Geneseo's defense held tight during the match and junior goalkeeper Vincent Maronski Jr. played all 90 minutes for the Knights and recorded a total of seven saves.
  • Arilotta's two goals give him a total of eight goals on the season, which makes him the leading goal scorer for the Knights.

WHAT'S NEXT:
  • The Geneseo Knights (6-5-2) will host SUNY Oswego Wednesday, October 11th at 4 p.m. at College Stadium. This will be another chance for the Knights to improve their record in the SUNYAC (2-3).
