Women's Volleyball Puts Together Thrilling Comeback, Defeats Brockport 3-2

GENESEO, N.Y. - The Geneseo women's volleyball team claimed yet another SUNYAC win, defeating Brockport on Wednesday, Oct. 18. Despite trailing two sets to none, the Knights used a raucous home crowd to help mount a comeback, ultimately beating the Golden Eagles 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brockport took an early lead in the opening set, and never looked back despite some big plays by Geneseo. An early service ace from Madison Popielski and back-to-back kills from Julia Wallace highlighted the opening set, but they dropped the set 25-16.
  • The second set saw back and forth action the whole way, with Cecilia Dignan, Jenna Garvey, and Carolyn Mack all recording second set aces to help keep momentum with Geneseo.. Down the stretch the set was tied at 24, but Brockport scored two consecutive points to claim the 26-24 win.
  • The third set was also close with the Knights backs up against the wall, given the 2-0 lead that Brockport had. Luckily, Geneseo was able to bounce back, taking many points from aces. The score was pushed to 25-24 in favor of the Knights, and the duo of Wallace and Alisiana Muscoreil were up for a set-winning block.
  • Still on the brink of defeat, the Knights were off to a quick start, taking a sizable lead early in the fourth set. Dignan record six points from the service line with the help of her fellow Knights. The set remained close, but at 24-22, Sommer Madigan found an open spot on the court for a set-point kill.
  • The fifth set started off in favor of Brockport, claiming a very early 5-0 lead. The Knight's were quick to respond, finally taking a lead at 7-6 following a Brockport error. Geneseo sealed the come from behind set and match with a 15-10 win.

QUICK FACTS
  • This marks the second time this season that the Knights have come back from being down 2-0 to start a match. They had also done it against Nazareth in early-September.
  • Geneseo's record improves to 6-1 in SUNYAC play and a 6-0 mark in home matches.
  • Sommer Madigan and Julia Wallace led the Knights with 10 kills each, while Linda Rossi (16), Cecilia Dignan (14), and Madison Popielski (13) all tallied double digit digs.
