Field Hockey Topples Houghton, 2-1

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo field hockey team hosted Houghton University and took down the Highlanders 2-1 on Tuesday evening. The win improves the Knights' overall record to 8-4 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Geneseo's offense took control in the first quarter as they put up six shots while keeping the Highlanders to zero.
  • The Knights found the back of the net just after the 20-minute mark, as senior forward Grace Olczak gave the team an early second-quarter lead.
  • By the half, the Knights' offense had tallied 12 shots and 10 penalty corners while their defense held Houghton to one or less in each of those categories.
  • Coming out of halftime, the Highlanders found a way to sneak one into the back of the net and tie the game at 1-1.
  • The Knights regained the lead less than seven minutes later and kept the Highlanders' offense away from the net throughout the rest of the third quarter.
  • A shot by Houghton off of a penalty corner in the final minute of play could have acted as the tying score but it was wide of the goal as Geneseo held on to win 2-1.
  • Graduate goalkeeper Sarah Quinlan played the entire first half and tallied Geneseo's only save in the game.
QUICK FACTS
  • Sophomore midfielders Shannon Cunningham and Sam Lewis led the Knights with five shots in the match. Along with Cunningham and Lewis, Olczak and senior defender Olivia Hernick tallied multiple shots on-goal against Houghton.
  • Olczak's goal brought her season total to four and collegiate career to 14.
  • Quinlan's save put her at 26 on the season.
