Field Hockey Overcomes Early Deficit to Defeat William Smith, 3-2

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo Field Hockey team overcame a two-goal deficit to earn a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over visiting William Smith on Wednesday night at College Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • William Smith applied pressure early using a full-field high pressing defense to generate turnovers in the offensive end. The Herons scored a pair of quick goals in the first quarter to take a 2-0 lead.
  • In the second quarter, Geneseo controlled the pace of play and generated several offensive opportunities. The Knights got on the scoreboard with 9:41 remaining in the second period when first-year midfielder Shannon Cunningham crossed a ball into the attacking circle and sophomore forward Emma Fon redirected it into the cage, cutting the lead in half.
  • With 8:48 to play in the third quarter, the Knights tied the game. Off a penalty corner set play, junior defender Olivia Hernick fired a shot goalward. Junior forward Katrina Clare tipped it just in front of the goalkeeper's pads, redirecting it into the cage to tie the game at 2-2.
  • In the final frame, first-year midfielder Sam Lewis controlled an aerial pass out of the air and quickly found Grace Olczak on the left flank. Olczak chipped a reverse shot over the keeper's stick side and into the netting for the go-ahead goal with just over 10 minutes to play.
  • Senior goalkeeper Sarah Quinlan made several crucial plays down the stretch, turning away four William Smith penalty corners as the Knights held on for the victory.

QUICK FACTS
  • Fon, Clare and Olczak each scored their first goals of the season to propel the Knights to the victory.
  • Lily Spitz started in goal, making three saves in the first 24 minutes before Quinlan came off the bench for the final 36 minutes, finishing with four saves to earn the win.
  • Cunningham earned her second assist of the season while Lewis and Hernick tallied their first assists of the year.
