Women's Soccer Takes Down Lyons To Earn First Victory

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo sophomore midfielder Lindsey Matthews scored the eventual game-winner at the end of the first half as the Knights earned a 2-0 victory over visiting Wheaton (Mass.) on Sunday afternoon at College Stadium

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the 41st minute, senior defender Faye Higgins fired a corner kick into a dangerous area near the penalty spot, first-year forward Abby Foster trapped it down and teed it up for Matthews who one-timed the shot past the Wheaton goalkeeper to give the Knights a 1-0 lead just before the halftime break.
  • Midway through the second half, Higgins and junior midfielder McKinley Skala combined for an attacking run on the right flank, passing into the box. Higgins beat her defender and was knocked over from behind, earning a penalty kick.
  • Senior forward Lindsay Wright stepped up to the penalty mark and blasted a shot just inside the right post, out of the reach of the diving goalie to extend the lead to 2-0 with just over seven minutes to play.
  • Senior goalkeeper Angel Bennett made a pair of crucial stops in the final five minutes of play to preserve the shutout and post her first clean sheet of the season.

QUICK FACTS
  • Lindsey Matthews tallied her third career goal while Wright scored her 10th career goal. Foster registered her first career collegiate point with the assist.
  • Bennett notched her seventh career shutout, making a pair of saves to hold the Lyons scoreless.
