ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's volleyball team closed out a big weekend of action at the RIT Invitational by defeating the Tigers, 3-1, and then sweeping Lasell.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the opening set against RIT, the Knights gained momentum early with a five-point run at 9-9, powered by a pair of kills from junior opposite Julia Wallace. The momentum shift gave Geneseo a big enough lead to hold on for the first set victory, 25-21.
- The Tigers came out firing in the second set, taking a quick 10-2 lead over Geneseo. However, the Knights used a seven-point run with junior outside hitter Linda Rossi at the service line to get back into the set. Geneseo rattled off four-straight kills and then an ace from Rossi to begin the rally and eventually get the score to 13-12 in favor of RIT.
- The Knights went on to take a lead as big as six points at 22-16, but in a set full of runs the Tigers bounced back and got the score within one point at 24-23. Sophomore outside hitter Shannon Zembrzycki stepped up in the clutch and delivered a kill at set point to seal the 25-23 victory and give Geneseo the 2-0 advantage.
- RIT was able to answer with a third-set victory, but the Knights wouldn't let them push it to five sets as they closed out the win 25-19 in the fourth set. Rossi tallied four-consecutive service aces in the fourth set up 21-19 to seal the match.
- Looking to close out the weekend 3-1 overall, Geneseo swept Lasell behind a strong offensive performance. The Knights took the first two sets behind hitting percentages of .310 and .292.Â
- Geneseo earned the three-set victory with scores of 25-21, 25-12, and 25-23.
