Women's Volleyball Earns A Split At RIT Invitational

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's volleyball team earned a split at the first day of the RIT Invitational on Friday evening. The Knights dropped the opening match to Mount Union, 3-0, but then bounced back with a sweep of Nazareth.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Geneseo got off to a slow start against the Purple Raiders and found themselves trailing 17-10 in the opening set. However, the Knights quickly fought their way back into the set by winning 10 of the next 13 points to tie the set at 20.
  • Junior opposite Julia Wallace erased a set-point for Mount Union with a kill at 24-22. The Purple Raiders held strong on their second chance to take the opening frame and escaped the Knights comeback attempt with a 25-23 victory.
  • Mount Union went on to win the following two sets, 25-16 and 25-14 to close out the match.
  • In the second match, Geneseo was locked in a tight battle for the first set with the score tied at 14. The Knights took control of the set with a four-point run to go up 18-14 and they never looked back as a block from Shannon Zembrzycki and Jackie Borland sealed a 25-19 win.
  • The Knights went on to complete the sweep of Nazareth with scores of 25-19 and 25-18 in the second and third sets, respectively.

QUICK FACTS
  • Borland dominated the second match offensively for Geneseo, tallying seven kills on nine attempts for a .778 hitting percentage. She also added four blocks against the Golden Flyers and six against Mount Union.
  • Isabella Imbo led the way offensively against the Purple Raiders, recording a game-high 11 kills.
  • Senior libero Emily Haber totaled 25 digs on the day, leading the defensive effort.

The Knights return to the RIT Invitational tomorrow to face the hosts and Lasell at 12 an 2 p.m., respectively.
