GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's volleyball team earned a split in its home tri-match on Saturday, September 10 as they fell in the opener to Heidelberg 3-2, but then bounced back in the final game with a 3-1 victory over St. John Fisher.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Against Heidelberg, the Knights got off to a slow start as they trailed 7-2 early. Geneseo eventually climbed back into the game and tied it up at 19-19 after back-to-back kills from junior outside hitter Linda Rossi and a block from Rossi and Madison Gamberg. The big three-point run wasn't enough to give the Knights the boost they needed to steal the opening frame and they fell 25-21.
- Rossi stayed hot on offense for Geneseo in the second set as she tallied seven kills to lead the team to a 25-17 victory. The Knights relentless attack continued into the third set as they hit .303 as a team and took a 2-1 lead with a 25-11 win.
- Geneseo couldn't keep their momentum going and went on to drop the fourth and fifth sets by four points each. Heidelberg was powered by a six-point run in the fifth set to end up taking an 11-7 advantage.
- The Knights bounced back in their second match of the day, taking a dramatic first-set win over St. John Fisher, 27-25. Geneseo fought off a set point at 24-23 with a kill from senior middle blocker Jackie Borland. After trading the next two points with the Cardinals, back-to-back kills from Rossi sealed the first-set win.
- Geneseo dropped the second set to St. John Fisher, but they were able to rebound with another clutch performance late in the third set. With the score tied at 20-20, the Knights won five of the next six points, capped off by a kill from sophomore outside hitter Shannon Zembrzycki to end the set at 25-21 for Geneseo.
- After trailing 5-4 in the fourth set, the Knights never trailed again to the Cardinals and went on to win the final set 25-21. Their defensive effort held St. John Fisher to a match-low nine kills and .029 hitting percentage in the set.
QUICK FACTS
- Rossi tallied a team-high 18 kills against Heidelberg and hit .205, while Borland hit .500 out of the middle with seven kills. Borland led the way against the Cardinals with nine kills and a .389 hitting percentage, while junior opposite Julia Wallace notched eight kills and a .471 hitting percentage on no errors.
- Senior libero Emily Haber posted 29 digs against St. John Fisher and 25 against Heidelberg to lead the defense. Allie Driesen and Carolyn Mack paced the offense by combining for 53 assists against Heidelberg and 38 against the Cardinals.
- Geneseo has now won five of the last seven matchups against St. John Fisher, while the matchup against Heidelberg marked the first between the two teams since 2011.
