GENESEO, N.Y. – The SUNY Geneseo Women's Soccer team opened the season on Thursday afternoon at College Stadium, falling to visiting Rochester, 2-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Geneseo opened the game with sustained offensive pressure over the first few minutes of the game, but Rochester outshot the Knights, 6-5, in the opening period including three shots on goal.
- With just under nine minutes to play in the first half, Rochester converted on a set piece, scoring off a header after a corner kick to take a 1-0 lead before the halftime break.
- In the second half, Geneseo was held to just two shots on goal. Graduate midfielder Mackenzie Griffin placed one on net and senior forward Lindsay Wright added a shot on goal but both attempts were turned away.
- Rochester added to their goal total on a counter-attack, scoring with 6:55 to play to make it 2-0. The Knights pressured throughout the final minutes but could not generate a score.
QUICK FACTS
- Graduate forward Nicole Bell, Wright and Griffin finished with the Knights' only shots on goal while the offense was held to just seven shots on the day.
- Senior goalkeeper Angel Bennett made five saves in net but took the loss.
- The Knights fell in their season opener for the first time since 2013, snapping a seven-game winning streak in the season opener.
