Field Hockey Storms Past New Paltz, 5-1

GENESEO, N.Y. – Senior forward Maggie Phipps finished with two goals and an assist while Sarah Quinlan notched a season-high nine saves to lead the Knights past visiting New Paltz, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon at College Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • New Paltz nearly took the lead on the first penalty corner of the game, but Sarah Quinlan saved the initial attempt and Olivia Vinciguerra earned a defensive save on a goal line stop of the shot off the rebound.
  • The Knights took the lead early in the second period when Katrina Clare broke away from the defense and found Maggie Phipps with a pass to the back post. Phipps smashed it into the back of the cage to give Geneseo a 1-0 advantage.
  • New Paltz tied the game just 44 seconds later, converting on a scramble after a penalty corner, but the Knights regained the lead when Grace Olczak finished off a rebound with a diving effort to put Geneseo ahead, 2-1.
  • The Knights kept on the pressure and added a third period insurance goal as Phipps stole the ball away at midfield and fed Clare in transition for the quick score, making it 3-1.
  • Sam Lewis and Phipps each added a fourth quarter goal as the Knights pulled away for the 5-1 victory.

QUICK FACTS
  • Sarah Quinlan earned the win in cage with a season-high nine saves, including her 100th career save, improving to 7-2 in cage this season, despite conceding the Knights' first goal since Sept. 14th, snapping the team's program-record shutout streak.
  • Phipps scored her sixth and seventh goals of the season while Clare and Olczak each tallied their seventh goal of the year as well. Olczak scored the go-ahead goal against her former team, transferring into Geneseo from New Paltz after the 2019 season.
  • Geneseo earned its eighth-consecutive victory, improving to 15-12 all-time against their conference rival, New Paltz.
