GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's soccer team celebrated senior day with a 3-0 victory over Potsdam on Saturday afternoon at College Stadium. The win moved the Knights to 10-4-2 overall and 7-1-1 in SUNYAC play, good enough to earn the No. 2 seed for the postseason tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Knights controlled the action throughout the first half, registering seven shots compared to just one from Potsdam. Geneseo couldn't find a way to capitalize in the opening 45 minutes however, and entered halftime locked in a 0-0 tie.
- Geneseo continued to put the pressure on, and in the 57th minute graduate midfielder Hannah Sullivan sent a free kick to the back post, where fellow graduate midfielder Mackenzie Griffin knocked it into the back of the net to give the Knights the 1-0 lead.
- Nearly 10 minutes after Griffin's goal, Sullivan connected with the New Hyde Park, N.Y. native once again. In the 66th minute, Sullivan sent a corner kick to the far post where Griffin was perfectly positioned again to clean it up and make it a 2-0 advantage.
- Junior forward Liv Raucci added to the Knights lead in the 72nd minute, flicking a header to the lower right corner off a cross from senior forward Lindsay Wright.
QUICK FACTS
- Griffin's goals marked the first of the season for her, and the sixth and seventh goals of her career. Sullivan reached a team-high eight assists on the season.
- Raucci recorded her fifth goal of the season, while Wright's assist pushed her season point total to a team-high 19.
- Senior goalkeeper Angel Bennett earned the win in goal with just over 81 minutes played, and the Knights tallied their 11th shutout of the season.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Knights clinched the No. 2 seed and a bye into the semifinal round of the SUNYAC tournament. They will host their semifinal match on Wednesday, Nov. 2.
