ONEONTA, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's soccer team picked up its first win in SUNYAC action in a big way on Saturday afternoon, as they upended No. 14 Oneonta, 1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Knights withstood an early flurry of shots from the Red Dragons, with sophomore goalkeeper Vincent Maronski, Jr. making a pair of saves in the first six minutes of play.
- Neither team was able to find the back of the net after the first half, and Oneonta held a slight advantage in shots at 5-4.
- Early in the second half, sophomore midfielder Stefan Nikolic made a great offensive run to the top of the box and drew a foul. Sophomore defender Joe Vogt stepped up to take the free kick and drilled it past the goalkeeper to give the Knights a 1-0 advantage.
- Maronski and the Geneseo defense held strong following Vogt's goal, withstanding six total shtos and three on target to hold on for the 1-0 victory.
QUICK FACTS
- The win snapped a 13-game skid against the Red Dragons for the men's soccer team, with the previous win coming in 2009 by a score of 3-1.
- Vogt has now scored off a free kick twice in the last four games, netting the other against Rochester on Sep. 20.
- The Knights have recorded five shutouts this season and sit at 7-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play.
