Field Hockey Sets Program Record With Fifth-Straight Shutout, 2-0 Victory over Cortland

GENESEO, N.Y. – Junior forward Katrina Clare struck for two goals and Sarah Quinlan posted a four-save shutout as the Knights defeated visiting Cortland, 2-0, in State University of New York Athletic Conference Field Hockey action on Saturday at College Stadium. Geneseo has posted five-straight shutouts, holding opponent scoreless since Sept. 14, the longest such streak in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Geneseo and Cortland played evenly through the first quarter with the Knights outshooting the Red Dragons, 5-0, in the opening frame.
  • In the second quarter, Clare intercepted a pass at midfield and sprung Phipps down the far side with a long forward pass. Phipps drove toward goal and fired a centering pass toward the pads where Clare tapped it home past the charging goalkeeper to make it 1-0.
  • The Knights added to their lead in the third quarter when Cassidy Sturdevant dribbled past several Cortland defenders on the right side to gain the end line. She fired a pass back into the goal mouth where Clare one-timed it home to make it 2-0.
  • In the fourth quarter, the Red Dragons pressed to get on the scoreboard but Quinlan held the visitors without a tally. Cortland's best chance came on a driven shot from a penalty corner but Quinlan made a lunging kick save to parry it away.

QUICK FACTS
  • Clare tallied her second multi-goal game of the season to bring her season total to a team-high six goals.
  • Phipps recorded her second assist of the season while Sturdevant dished off her first.
  • The victory marks the Knights' first win over Cortland since the 2019 SUNYAC Championship game.
  • Geneseo has posted five-straight shutouts and have not allowed a goal since a 6-2 victory over St. John Fisher on Sept. 14, the longest shutout streak in program history.
