Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's basketball team had a flair for the dramatic for the second night in a row as they defeated Buffalo St. 78-77 in overtime. The Knights improve to 2-0 in SUNYAC play with the win as they defeated Fredonia 81-80 on Friday night behind a last-second shot.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game was close early on with both teams changing leads, but the Knights pulled away as the first half came to a close. Senior forward Michael Gannon converted a layup with just a minute remaining to give the Knights their largest lead of the game at 35-25.
- The Bengals wasted no time cutting back into Geneseo's lead in the second half, and ended up taking a 43-42 advantage with 14 minutes left to play. Buffalo St. kept that momentum going and went on to lead by as many as nine points.
- It was the Knights turn to mount a comeback, and they did just that after first-year guard Sebastian Pacheco drained a three-point shot with six minutes left to take back the lead for Geneseo at 62-61.
- Geneseo trailed by two points with 45 seconds on the clock and Buffalo St. with possession. The Knights defense came up big and forced a shot-clock violation to give the offense a chance to win or tie the game with 11 seconds left. Graduate guard Terrance Nichols attempted a game-winning three with two seconds on the clock and missed, but junior guard Cole Kattan tipped in the rebound as the buzzer went off to force overtime.
- With a minute left to play in overtime, Nichols drew a foul while attempting a three and Geneseo was down 76-75. Nichols drained all three free throws to make it 78-76 and the defense held on for the Knights as they came away with a 78-77 win.
QUICK FACTS
- Kattan was also the leading scorer for the Knights with 17 points on 7-9 shooting with 3-4 shooting from deep.
- The Knights had five total players reach double-digit scoring, Harrison Dignan with 15, Gannon with 13, Pacheco with 12, and Nichols with 10 joined Kattan.
- Geneseo has now won three straight games against Buffalo St.
